Introduction

Compact and stylish, with Nespresso pods and an automatic and detachable milk foaming carafe, it does more than just live up to its name: cappuccinos, latte macchiatos, espressos, ristrettos, lungos and frothy warm milk are prepared in seconds with a mere push of the corresponding pre-set button, without depriving you the opportunity to modify the settings yourself.

Design & Features

Without a doubt, the Lattissima Touch preserves Delonghi’s charming design and neat style. Notice the how its distinguishing curved coffee outlet is integrated into the body of the machine, and how neatly the milk carafe rests upon its own platform, flushing with the side.

Another exciting feature is the used capsule container and the extra drip tray, designed to slide inside and to afford the Touch an overall elegance that is hard to find in so large Espresso machines.

Coming in an array of colours (red, white and black), it will easily mix with your kitchen décor; the Touch boasts a number of well-studied design details. For example, the metre-long power cable and its flex store below gives you more options on where to place it. Its extra sliding drip tray can extend even more and serve as a platform for espresso cups. Finally, aside from its surprising small weight and even smaller worktop footprint, it is equipped with several upgraded features compared to its predecessors, with the fast thermoblock heat-up time of nearly 25 seconds, the auto switch-off, and the cleaning alerts for the milk carafe and descaling being the most notable.

Operation & Coffee Quality

Making drinks and preparing your favourite coffee is a piece of cake – a simple touch is usually enough (as denoted by the machine’s name).

Making the most of its 19 bars of pressure, the Lattissima Touch won’t let you down as to the quality of its beverages. Affording the lungos, espressos and ristrettos with their distinctive, intense aroma and smooth taste, and preparing an excellent, creamy froth, the Touch offers an array of coffee options, including decaf and caramel and chocolate-flavoured pods, with numerous possible combinations. On the other hand, you need to use compatible pods.

Still, handling may prove tricky at first for someone that hasn’t used an Espresso machine before – but nothing too difficult.

Let us start with the water tank; wide but with a rather slim depth and a hinged lid that can also be used as a carry handle, it might prove a bit tricky to fill up directly from a tap. Using a jug makes things much easier.

To turn it on just push the button to the back. Immediately, the drinks symbols flash, and the machine starts to heat up. Note though that they are very responsive and sensitive, and you can easily press the wrong one by mistake – especially if you are not properly familiarised with the symbols. Hence, it would be a good idea to resort frequently to the manual to avoid any mistakes until you get the hang of it.

As you will instantly see, the carafe attaches easily, slotting into the steam connector. It has its own door that closes when not used. The carafe’s spout folds in for storage. It has to be angled though towards the cup when you prepare a drink unless you want it to dispense all over your kitchen-top. Note also that the carafe’s spout spurts slightly when dispensing and undergoing a cleaning cycle. However, after a milky drink is dispensed, the machine reminds you to clean it – although you don’t have to do it after every single drink.

To clean it, just hold down a button while steam runs through. You will also have to disassemble the carafe and clean it properly every couple of days. It can be placed in a dishwasher.

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent price for a milk and pod machine
  • A wide variety of coffee options
  • Fresh milk foam
  • One-touch drinks
Cons
  • Water filling is a bit tricky
  • You will have to use compatible pods

Our Opinion

The Lattissima Touch is highly esteemed among coffee enthusiasts, and for a good many reasons. Nicely designed, lightweight, with several clever features and a genuine one-touch technology, it may be a bit restrictive when it comes pods, but it surely offers a wide variety of coffee options.

2. DeLonghi Dedica – Nice and Simple Non-Capsule

Introduction

De'Longhi Dedica Style EC685M Traditional Pump

View on Amazon

Far more compact than any conventional espresso machine (almost half their average width), DeLonghi’s Dedica was meant to integrate all their standard charming features with a few additional ones in a much more portable design. Still, it does have an amply sized cup warmer and more than sufficient water tank.

Note also that, aside from ground coffee, DeLonghi’s Dedica uses also Easy Serving Espresso capsules (ESE), which simplifies the whole brewing process.

Fresh ground coffee
Adjustable Milk Frothing Steam Device
Hot Water Delivery for Americanos & Herbal Tea
Three filters: Single, Double and an ESE Compatible Filter

Design & Features

A mere glance at its small and neat footprint is enough to see that Dedica goes beyond the standard style of the conventional pump machine. And there is more.

Several features that are usually found at the front, like the steam wand control system, were moved to Dedica’s side, and the single or double espressos selection buttons and steam, usually found at the front, are now conveniently placed to the chrome strip around the top. As a last surprise, the power button is nicely tucked at the bottom trim at the side. Coming in three elegant finishes (stainless steel, red or black) and enveloped in an overall sleek metal casing, all these novelties add to its appeal and winning looks.

Now, let’s talk about coffee beverages. Dedica allows you to set your water’s hardness and then pick the temperature you prefer for your coffee, along with the amount of time you wish it to stay on after use. You can also select your preferred brewing variables and adjust the amount of coffee, its tamping, and how long or short you prefer your espresso.

A nice and handy feature is the boiler safety system, protecting your coffee from getting scorched. The removable drip tray also enables you to use larger cups under the spout and prepare longer drinks with the steam wand.

Operation & Coffee Quality

Dedica’s brewing is a bit complex – at least at the beginning, but everything in it set’s quality as its top priority, not convenience or speed. If you value rapidity over odour and taste, Dedica isn’t for you. Dedica’s espresso, for example, boasts such a full body, thickly creamed, with a mesmerising aroma, that is certainly worth a few seconds more in your everyday schedule.

Start by choosing your preferred filter. You have three options, the single filter, the double one, or the ESE filter, placed smartly on the underside to avert mix-ups.

Next, insert it into the holder (it can be a bit tricky this one) that is already filled with ground coffee and tamped down. Level it out with the separate presser. Naturally, if you have an ESE capsule, you may skip this step. Then, just insert the filter holder and twist it. Pick the number of shots, and you will have your coffee swiftly dispensed, with almost no drips at the finishing drops. The steam wand is perfect for milk froths.

A small problem is the overheating of the boiler, which doesn’t allow you to keep making coffee or use the steam wand. Nevertheless, you can cool it down by letting all the hot water out from the wand.

Cleaning is required after each and every use, but it’s fast and effortless: just detach the outer cover and clean the rubber spout.

Pros
  • Compact design, elegant looks
  • Excellent coffee quality
  • Nice settings, simple operation
  • Capability of using ESE capsules
Cons
  • Some boiler overheating issues

Our Opinion

Boasting a truly wonderful and compact design and excellent coffee quality, Dedica is ideal for those among you who value taste over speed, especially since the boiler overheats and needs some time to cool it down. On top of that, being able to use ESE capsules makes things simpler and minimises the mess and fuss.

3. DeLonghi Scultura Coffee Machine – A Barista-Style Espresso Machine

Introduction

De'Longhi Scultura ECZ351BK Traditional Pump

View on Amazon

No, we are not DeLonghi’s advertisers, but the firm indeed has some of the best espresso machines in the market today. Scultura is one of them.

Boasting a robust yet elegant metal exterior and an appealing curved-edged design, DeLonghi’s Scultura ECZ351 pleases the eye and enthrals the palate.

Fresh ground coffee
Adjustable Milk Frothing Steam Device
Hot Water Delivery for Americanos & Herbal Tea
Three filters: Single, Double and an ESE Compatible Filter

Design & Features

No need to elaborate on Scultura’s looks – a gander is enough. Just notice the large 1.4L water reservoir resting at the back, which can be filled either in place or after being removed, directly from your tap.

A small issue has to do with the rather short mug space – no more than 7,6 cm high, adequate for usual espresso cups but not for others.

Operation & Coffee Quality

Let’s move now to what is more important, the quality of the coffee. Simply put, it is nothing short than great, and the way to dispense is easy and straightforward.

At first, pick your preferred filter – single espresso shot or double. Its small number of controls makes the process simpler than ever: aside from the activation button, you have your water dispenser, the temperature steam control, as well as a tap for turning on hot water or steam, depending on the chosen mode. Besides the buttons, indicators help you understand when the machine is hot enough to dispense hot water or steam. In the meantime, use the warmer to pre-heat your cup(s) and make your coffee as hot as you wish.

Coffee grounds do not require much pressure. Coffee is dispensed smoothly through the group handle, finishing with a nicely coloured and thick crema, and affording your espresso a truly excellent taste and aroma.

Steam wand makes for great lattes too. The milk jug reaches the required temperature surprisingly fast, leaving you plenty of time to control the amount of foam produced on top.

Bear in mind that turning off the steam mode does not vent out the hot water; you will have to make use of the tap to do that – at least if you don’t wish to scorch your next shot of coffee. You may also use the steam wand for hot water, pressing the water dispenser button to engage the pump and then using the tap to pour the water.

Closing, a few words about cleaning. Since dripping is minimal and concentrated on the large tray, you will only have to slide it out and empty it. The group handle is easily tapped into the bin since there are springs holding its filter in place. Just make sure your tap doesn’t have too much pressure unless you wish to see your filter ending up into the bin.

Pros
  • Fantastic design
  • Large capacity
  • Simple operation
  • Excellent coffee quality
Cons
  • Short mug space

Our Opinion

Offered at a great price and boasting as simple an operation as one can ever be, DeLonghi’s Scultura espresso machine goes beyond than just meeting your expectations.

4. Sage BES810BSS the Duo Temp Pro Espresso Machine – Best with a Steam Wand

Introduction

Sage BES810BSS the Duo Temp Pro

Setting inventiveness and creative design as its top priorities, Sage’s Duo Temperature Pro coffee machine stands out for its electronic PID temperature controller – a great feature adjusting and stabilising your coffee’s temperature during extraction. Low-Pressure Pre Infusion Gradually Increasing for Even Extraction
Easily Adjustable Steam Wand for Texturing Milk

Design & Features

Designed to produce bold and flavourful espressos without taking much space on your kitchen-top and deafening you, the Sage Duo Temperature Pro boasts a clever design, whose most ingenious feature is the electronic PID controller.

What this clever insertion actually does is make sure that the extraction process runs as it should, supervising it in real-time and continually calibrating its temperature settings, again and again, guaranteeing the best possible temperature stability. As a result, the brewing is simply impeccable, and the coffee dispensed boasts a truly outstanding blend of acidity, sweetness and bitterness.

Another great feature of the Duo Temperature Pro is its low-pressure pre-infusion system. It is designed to steadily increase the water pressure throughout the extraction process and ensure an even, optimum extraction. Besides, mastering a mighty 15-bar pump, the Duo Temperature Pro has what it takes to reach and exert the ideal amount of pressure for a perfect cup of a bold and rich espresso.

Speaking of precision, note the machine’s stainless steel water core, designed to keep all the temperature settings accurate and steady during the brewing process, from start to finish.

Next, we have the 360-degree adjustable milk frothing wand. Handy and easy to use, it is just perfect for lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and other coffee drinks that need a rich milk cream finishing touch. When you use it, though, keep in mind to let the machine cool down a bit before preparing another espresso, to avoid scorching your coffee and making it too bitter to drink.

Operation & Coffee Quality

Now, a few words about the coffee making process, which the manufacturer has strived to make as simple and effortless a possible. First, you will have to insert the portafilter (a bit smaller than usual, but still ok) into the group head, and set the control dial to the beverage you fancy – the “Espresso” for instance, thus initialising the brewing process. That’s it! Note that the machine heats up in just 40 seconds!

Tall mugs or short ones, whatever you prefer you will be able to use. The mug space is tall enough to accommodate all. On top of that, the surprisingly large and removable 1.8L water tank has an integrated water filtration system, simplifying the whole preparation process. Last, the storage tray is handily placed behind the drip tray, allowing you to keep all the accessories together in one place, which include:

  • a dose trimming tool for maximum precision,
  • a set of advanced dual wall filter baskets for pre-ground coffee,
  • a set of single wall filter baskets for freshly ground coffee,
  • a water filter,
  • a stainless steel milk jug.

Unfortunately, the Duo Temperature Pro is not designed for coffee beans, ESE pods or capsules.

Cleaning is even easier, thanks to its handy set of cleaning accessories (tablets, cleaning tool, silicon disk) coming with the machine. Regarding maintenance, some handy features, like the “Empty Me” indicator light when the drip tray gets full, make such chores a breeze.

Pros
  • PID-Controlled Temperature Stabilisation
  • 360-Degree Rotating Steam Wand
  • Quick Heat-Up Time
  • Steady Steam Pressure Regardless
  • Active Steam Purge
  • Much Less Noisy
Cons
  • No ESE & Capsules
  • Small portafilter

Our Opinion

Sleek and stylish, the Duo Temp Pro looks great and performs even greater. Far less noisy than most espresso machines, it is straightforward to use, it gets cleaned even easier, and requires minimal maintenance.

5. Gaggia Brera RI9305 – Many Coffee Options, but pricey

Gaggia bean-to-cup machine Brera RI9305/11

View on Amazon

Introduction

The Gaggia Brera is a truly singular coffee machine designed by a firm that is rightly considered the first truly professional coffee machine brand.

With a winning and sturdy stainless steel front panel, multiple customisation options and a built-in ceramic burr grinder, Gaggia RI9305 surprised us with its affordable price and smooth operation.

Self-cleaning Feature
Class A – Energy Consumption in Stand-By Mode
Integrated Grinder with Ceramic Grinder
Customisation Options: Among Others Water Quantity, Grinding Coarseness & Strength, Double Shot
Energy-Efficient Standby Mode Activating Automatically, Saving Energy

Design & Features

Let’s start with Brera’s stainless steel front panel, affording it this charming and “professional” looking appearance. Some of its parts, mostly the sides and control knob, are made from prime quality plastic. As for the layout, it values simplicity over everything else. Apart from the mode selection dial, it has no more than just four buttons – on/off, water quantity and coffee blend.

One of Brera’s most interesting features is its integrated ceramic burr grinder. Placed on top with numerous coarseness options, it ide designed to produce much less heat while grinding, thus preventing the evaporation of the flavour and the weakening of its aroma. Note also that ceramics are inert, which means that grinding does not affect the beans’ flavour.

Brera’s standby mode is also very handy; it turns on automatically after 60 minutes of non-use and requires less than a watt per hour.

The “rapid steam pipe,” ideal for snappy milk frothing for cappuccinos and lattes, requires less than 10 seconds to heat up! The water tank is pretty easily accessible too.

Brera takes both beans and ground coffee – which is great if you like decaf beverages. Choosing between the two is easy and allows you to switch blend without removing the beans.

The grinder is equipped with a knob that adjusts coarseness, as well as espresso’s strength, using the matching three-option button on the front. On top of that, you can choose between long coffee and espresso. Double shots are also available, but rather than forcing double the amount of water through the ground coffee, Brera grinds a second load of beans, preserving the coffee’s strong flavour and aroma!

Right to the left of the control panel, you will find a pair of buttons adjusting the coffee’s volume and quantity, depending on your cup’s size. The coffee dispenser’s height can also be adjusted.

Note also there is a warmer to warm your cup in advance and keep your beverage as hot as you prefer it.

Operation & Coffee Quality

Handling the machine is a breeze, and the quality of the result is pretty great – not the best in the market, but among close enough. The ground coffee espresso, for instance, is far better than the fresh beans espresso. The handy milk frother is perfect for cappuccinos.

A small issue with Brera is the cleaning, not so much with the coffee dispenser, as to its impressive exterior finish.

Aside from that, cleaning and basic maintenance are pretty straightforward. Ground coffee waste can be emptied quickly from the front of the machine. Brera has a rinse cycle, automatically starting every time you turn the machine one. Still, once in a while you will need to clean more thoroughly some of its components, especially the brewing unit, which is easy to detach. The machine itself will let you know when it requires descaling.

Pros
  • Great looks
  • Excellent ground coffee espressos
  • Plenty of customisation options.
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • A bit tricky to clean thoroughly and descale it
  • The drip tray needs to be emptied frequently

Our Opinion

No, Gaggia’s Brera isn’t the fastest nor the most technologically advanced coffee machine available today, but it is sturdy, highly reliable, makes great ground-coffee espresso and will upgrade your kitchen’s appearance. Its milk frother is fast and handy. This great combination of design finesse, rich coffee flavour, and affordable price is what makes Brera such a great Espresso machine.

Design & Features

True, it is made plastic, but this does not mean in any way whatsoever that it comes short in construction quality and robustness. An appealing front with a prime quality gloss finish covers its sturdy yet slim casing. All buttons are touch responsive, affording the Barista TS a high-tech air.

The design is well-studied to the last detail; the steamer tube connected to the milk container easily fits to both spout sides and its tubes, when not used, plug into the drip tray. The spout slides smoothly up and down, affording sufficient space for most cups and espresso glasses. Its straightforward set of controls and LCD screen makes the whole handling a breeze.

Still, what makes the Barista TS stand out from the crowd is its fantastic dual-hopper system! Under the top lid, a divided space allows you to use different varieties of beans for each drink. Besides the lid, buttons allow you to select different types of drink, prepared with default recipes – short drink, like espressos, long ones, such as café crema doppios, short milk, like cappuccino, and long milk, like the café latté macchiato. Another pair of buttons controls the milk and hot water dispenser.

Bear in mind that all recipes default to bean hopper one unless you want to override it by tapping the bean selector button. The same way, using the controls, you can also override the volume of its drink and the coffee’s strength. If the default options do not meet your approval, change the recipes through the menu. Besides, you will never fell short of tasty choices – ristretto, lungo, caffè Americano and flat white, being able to adjust the volume of coffee, hot water, milk and milk froth for each matching recipe.

Barista TS caters for the needs of different users too, through four My Coffee modes, which allow you to match certain recipes to different people! Optimum customisation, and not just for the head of the family.

Operation & Coffee Quality

Still, most of you will probably find that you won’t need to tamper with the recipes since they do deliver excellent taste and aroma. Combined with prime quality beans, the Barista TS’s espresso was… just perfect!

Barista TS excels at milk frothing too – a weak spot for most coffee machines. Connect the milk tube to the milk container, and the machine automatically steams, froths and pours the milk, giving Cappuccinos and lattes the finishing touch they do need to give forth their genuine flavour.

After each drink, the machine reminds you to use the easy-clean system, by sticking the milk hose in the drip tray, and clean it with steam.

As for maintenance, we can earnestly claim that the Caffeo Barista TS ranks among the easiest bean-to-cup machines available. Most of the work is done automatically. If you have coffee grounds clogging up its interior, just remove the brewing unit and rinse it thoroughly with plenty of water, every one or two weeks is enough.

You will also have to replace the reservoir’s water filter once in a while – the machine will tell you when. It will also notify you when you need to empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container. The first of the two is a bit tricky at first, but you will soon get used of it. Another small issue has to do with the hopper; sometimes the machines indicates that it is empty while there are some unused beans still inside.

Pros
  • Great, compact design
  • Amazing coffees, large range of drinks
  • Ultimate customisation for multiple users, great number of well-studied recipes
  • Fantastic milk frothing
Cons
  • Tricky drip tray emptying
  • Notifies of an empty hopper far too soon

Our Opinion

The Melitta Caffeo Barista TS has what it takes to challenge the best espresso machine for 2019. Great design, ultimate customisation, an array of balanced recipes, easy to use – and all at a great price!

Dualit’s Patented Pure Pour

Design & Features

Designed externally as a bar pump, Dualit’s Espresso-Auto Coffee breathes a neat appeal, with chrome details. Looking professional but boasting several non-complicated and user-friendly controls – including a handy portafilter, a milk-frothing steam wand and a cup-warming plate – it is surely designed to make your daily routine easier. Note also the extra space for cups and mugs could be a bit taller. It has a great array of dosing and drink selection buttons though, including espresso, double espresso, cup and steam. The steam wand buttons are located on the right, and not at the front as usual.

Contrary to most pod machines, this one is equipped with a rather big water tank of no less than 1.5 litres. Other handy details include the non-slip mat, designed to keep the metal drip tray intact and in place. In addition, the rubber-clad steam wand is easy to dismantle should you wish to clean it.

There is also an auto-start function, which is perfect if you need a fast shot of prime quality caffeine.

Operation & Coffee Quality

The moment you switch it on, the thermoblock heats up in around 45 seconds! The cup warmer does a great job in bringing your cup at the best possible temperature for your chosen beverage. Another fantastic feature is the temperature boost, enabling you to decide how hot your brewing will be.

All dosing buttons are configurable, but also come pre-set – ideal for inexperienced coffee lovers. The after-dispense mess is minimal, at least compared to most of its competitors.

Again, ground coffee espresso is far better – especially if you know what you are doing. If you do indeed, you can use the spoon provided for measuring the coffee and tamp it down. The insertion of the portafilter follows the standard process. In this stage, the machine’s ‘Pure Pour’ filter holder delivers two perfectly even espresso shots. Removing it may create a bit of a mess, but nothing chaotic.

The included stainless-steel jug is nice and handy for milk frothing with the steam wand. Pick the steam button, turn the control at the side and then immerse the wand in the milk, creating a creamy, consistent froth for your milky beverages.

Espressos made from the Dualit capsules is almost or even equally good with the one made from ground coffee – which is exceptional, especially when you taste the thick and golden cream.

Pros
  • Large water tank
  • Sturdy build
  • Versatile and easy to use
  • Several nice features
Cons
  • Not suitable for very tall cups
  • No receptacle for used pods or grounds

Our Opinion

Setting customisation and variety as its priority, the Dualit Espresso-Auto Coffee Machine rightly concludes our list for the best, most reliable and easy to use Espresso machines for 2019. A bit more complicated than the rest of our picks, but still a great value for money, it is certainly worth your attention.
